Blade Care: Removing the Blade
For best results, the mower blade must be kept sharp. Always replace a dull, bent, or damaged blade.
To remove the blade, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and place the wire where it cannot come in contact with the plug.
Turn the lawn mower on its side. Make sure the air filter and carburetor are up.
Next, use a wood block between the blade and mower housing to prevent the blade from turning when removing the blade bolt. There are blade holder accessories available to assist you with this task.
You should always protect your hands with gloves and wrap the blade with heavy cloth.
Now remove the blade bolt by turning it counterclockwise. Remove the blade.
Replacing the Blade
To replace the blade, be sure the trailing edge of the blade opposite the sharp edge is up toward the engine.
Some blades have wording on the blade to indicate which side faces down.
Be sure to use a block of wood between the blade and the lawn mower housing to prevent it from turning.
Tighten the blade bolt clockwise. The recommended tightening torque is 35 to 40 ft-lb.
Important: Blade bolts are specially heat-treated. If the bolt needs replacing, replace it only with an approved bolt.
For the best performance, you should keep the mower housing free of built-up grass. Clean the underside of your mower after each use.
Before tipping the lawn mower to drain the oil, empty the fuel tank by running the engine until the fuel tank is empty.
Changing the Oil
Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and place the wire where it cannot come in contact with the plug.
Tip the lawn mower on its side. Then remove the oil fill cap and lay it aside on a clean surface, and drain the oil into a suitable container.
Rock the lawn mower back and forth to remove any oil trapped inside the engine.
Be sure to wipe off any spilled oil from the lawn mower or side of the engine.
Fill the engine with oil. Slowly pour about 12 oz of oil down the oil fill spout into the engine. Wait 1 minute to allow the oil to settle.
Use the gauge on the oil fill cap dipstick to check the level. Insert the dipstick into the tube and tighten it. Then withdraw it to check the level.
Continue adding small amounts of oil and rechecking the dipstick until it reads full. Do not overfill the engine with oil.
Always be sure to retighten the oil fill cap before starting the engine.
Finish by reconnecting the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
It's possible the engine will smoke on startup.
Air Filter
Your engine will not run properly and may be damaged by using a dirty air filter. Replace the air filter annually.
Service the air cleaner more often under dusty conditions.
To clean the air filter, remove the cover. Next, carefully remove the cartridge.
Clean the filter by washing it in soapy water. Re-oil with 2 ounces of oil and squeeze the element into a clean cloth.
Install the new or cleaned cartridge and replace the cover.
