The first step in identifying the correct oil for your engine is to consult the vehicle owner's manual or service manual to determine the required API and oil type for your vehicle.

Consult Your Vehicle's Service Manual

Vehicle original equipment manufacturers use oil specification numbers or trade names such as Dexos to identify oils that meet their standards. GM licenses the Dexos branding to oil companies whose oils meet their stringent testing standards. Other oil standards may look like the examples on the screen. This information is located in the vehicle service manual and can also be found on the oil bottle.
